Two Trips to Figure Eight Lake in Late December 2005

[Photos by Tim Kelley & Tammy Thiele]

The day after Christmas I headed to Figure Eight Lake.  I had never been there and wanted to check it out.  Here you can see the big transmission line that supplies Anchorage with most of its electricity. When I got to the northeast corner of Figure Eight Lake I figured that I should ski a "Figure 8" on the lake ... ... so I did (this is a GPS route plotted on a map).
A few days later I teamed up with Tammy for a ski and ice fishing trip back to Figure Eight Lake. The snow conditions made for great and fast skiing the 18 miles to the lake. The trails leading to Figure Eight Lake are mostly on old seismic testing lines. Long and straight !!
Needless to say: Tammy caught the first pike, the biggest pike and twice as many pike as Tim. Tim tries doubling up to keep pace with Tammy.  An act of futility, nobody out-fishes Tammy! Northern Pike with a hooligan (smelt) tail that we used for bait in its mouth. Wolf tracks on Figure Eight Lake.
Tammy with Mt. Susitna in the background. Stopping for a quick picture on the way back. Our snowmobile and cargo sled. Trail to Figure Eight Lake.
Not only is pike good eating  ... but omelets with boiled pike eggs rule !!!!           ---->
